FOUNDER'S BIO
Dr. Jerry Schlesser founded Pure Scientific after decades of professional experience researching, designing, and producing clinical dietary supplements for the integrative medical community.
Educational Background & Early Career
Dr. Schlesser received doctorate degrees from University of Western States (UWS) and National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM). He subsequently founded NF Formulas, one of the oldest trusted manufacturers of clinical dietary supplements for health professionals. NF Formulas, his first physician-centered nutraceutical business, was purchased by Schwabe North America and still markets the clinical products he developed under the Integrative Therapeutics label.
Leadership & Broadcasting
As Chairman of the Board of Trustees at NCNM, Dr. Schlesser oversaw campus transition, faculty recruitment, curriculum updates, and legislative processes that established prescribing laws for Naturopathic Physicians in Oregon. He later served on the Board of Trustees at Bastyr University.
Dr. Schlesser hosted "New Horizons in Science and Medicine," a weekly medical news program which aired for seven consecutive years on Portland's NPR affiliate KBOO 90.7 FM, which received an American Medical Association award for "contributions to the betterment of the nation's welfare through the dissemination of health information to the American people."
Medical Research & Innovation
As an early member of Oregon's AIDS task force, Dr. Schlesser developed expertise in viral disease research. As a physician scientist, he invented InterVir-A, an antiviral drug evaluated in a multi-year trial at Oregon Health Sciences University. Following publication of the randomized controlled trial (p<0.00005) inThe Lancet, Dr. Schlesser founded BioPharmaceuticals Corporation, designing, constructing, and operating Oregon's first FDA-registered prescription drug manufacturing facility. InterVir-A was successfully licensed to a multinational pharmaceutical company.
He also developed Sterisept-TB, the first hospital grade antimicrobial TB disinfectant meeting the US EPA's Design for the Environment (DfE) standards.
Publishing & Reference Work
Medical Economics, publisher of the Physicians' Desk Reference (PDR), appointed Dr. Schlesser as Editor-in-Chief of "Drugs Available Abroad" (DAA). He recruited an expert advisory board from FDA, WHO, USP, PhRMA, PAHO, EU, and ASHP for this international drug reference, which received the coveted "RASD" award, the American Library Association's highest honor for "an outstanding reference source" as a valuable, trusted reference for physicians, hospitals, government agencies, and insurers.
Nutrition Specialization
As the first Naturopathic Physician certified as a "Certified Nutrition Specialist" by the American College of Nutrition, Dr. Schlesser developed the first comprehensive targeted nutraceutical protocol for Cancer Treatment Centers of America.
Educational Nutrition Products
Dr. Schlesser invented a specialized multivitamin called Potential for low-achieving children in failing schools. Based on over 10 continuous years of data, Potential was awarded US patent #7,771,756 with three separate claims: to enhance (1) learning (2) academic performance and (3) behavior. The product was dispensed daily to thousands of schoolchildren in US public schools, with the study featured in the PBS documentary "How to Turn Around A Failing School."
Sports Performance & Nutraceutical Companies
Dr. Schlesser founded several nutraceutical companies and invented many novel clinical products, including advanced nutraceuticals for Olympic teams, world record double decathletes, and professional athletes.
Current Research & Development
Dr. Schlesser currently works internationally with teams of academic research scientists to leverage BioSNEDS, NeuroSNEDS and DermaSNEDS, his novel self-emulsifying delivery systems that significantly enhance bioavailability of nutraceuticals to the body, brain and skin. Dr. Schlesser is currently developing methods to deliver molecules to mitochondria, intracellular targets, and to refine advanced fermentation technology targeting the human microbiome such as Urolithin-A. Verdant Nature, Inc. is organized to commercialize his inventions.
